At PCNS, we have consolidated 12 servers down to 2 using virtualization technology. This technology is represented by the funnel seen in the illustration at right.

Since most servers are under-utilized, they may be combined into one box without sacrificing performance.

Each server in our example consumes 220 watts of power continually. The average cost of electricity in the US in 2008 = 12 cents per kilowatt hour.

Each server consumes $231.26 worth of electricity each year.

10 Servers consume $2,312 worth of electricity per year . This is the savings.

Rebates!

California utility PG&E offers rebates of $300 to $600 for each server that companies eliminate using Sun or VMware virtualization products, with a maximum rebate of $4 million or 50% of the project's cost, whichever is less.
